HENRY NUNNING

DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT

At 6:40 yesterday afternoon Mr. Henry Nunning, the pioneer brewer of St. Joseph, died suddenly at his residence, No. 1102 Frederick Avenue, having received a stroke of paralysis. He had been up and about his premises during the day and only complained of feeling badly a short time before he received the stroke which soon reached the heart and stopped its throbbing forever. Deceased was born in the Province of Westphalia, Prussia, and emigrated to America in 1849, locating at La Porte, Ind., where he engaged in business but closed out there in 1854 and came to St. Joseph, where he has remained ever since. He established here, at the corner of Seventh and Faraon streets, the second brewery and by close application to business and square dealing acquired a competence. He retired from active business life some years ago, the brewing business having been conducted by his son and partner, Mr. Gus Nunning, since 1879. No man stood higher in this community than did Mr. Henry Nunning, whose pride it was that his word was as good as his bond, and that no living man could point to a dishonorable act of his. Deceased leaves several children, all of whom are grown, and if the writer mistakes not all residents of this city. The time of the funeral had not been agreed upon last night, but due notice thereof will be given by the Gazette.

AUGUST NUNNING DIES AT HIS HOME

Retired Business Man Had Been Ill Since Stroke of Paralysis Two Years Ago. After an illness which dated from a stroke of paralysis which he received about two years ago, August Nunning , 55 years old, one of the best known citizens of St. Joseph and a resident of the city for more than half a century, died yesterday morning at 4:15 o'clock at the residence, 1401 Jule street. Mr. Nunning was born in La Porte, Ind., and came to the city at the age of one year. His education was completed in Westphalia, Germany. Upon his return in 1871 he entered his father's office and later assumed an interest in the brewing business. Mr. Nunning retired from business ten years ago and the company was reorganized as the St. Joseph Brewing Company. It was connected with a number of other business enterprises and was largely instrumental in making St. Joseph livestock and railroad center. Mr. Nunning was one of the members of the first board of public works in the city. Mr. Nunning had been married twice. His second wife survives him. He had no children by either wife. Two sisters survive him, Mrs. J. T. Carbry and Mrs. William Byrne. The funeral will be held from his late residence, tomorrow at 10 o'clock, Rev. C. M. Chilton officiating. The pallbearers will be Major John L. Bittinger, J. B. Moss, L. C. Burnes, Dr. C. H. Darby, Carl R. Gist, T. F. Van Natta, J. M Nichols and Hugo Grebel. Interment will be in Mount Mora cemetery.

Epithet: The second man to brew beer in St. Joseph was Henry Nunning, a German who had gone first to LaPorte, Indiana, and then on to St. Joseph in 1854. His only son August would continue the business until 1895 when a lease agreement was reached with members of a rival, the St. Joseph Brewing Company, partially to fend off a growing number of adversarial competitors in a devastating beer war with Kansas City area brewers.
