Brief Biography: Milton Tootle, Sr., 86, St. Joseph, MO, died Thursday, at Heartland Medical Center. Mr. Tootle was born in St. Joseph, MO. Although residing the last 25 years in Edmonds, WA, he always considered St. Joseph his home. He graduated from the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut and then attended Westminster College for two years. He entered the United States Navy on February 15, 1941. Milt was a Naval Aviator awarded the Navy Cross for combat action in the Battle of Midway. He was credited with saving the carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, which was under attack by Japanese aircraft. He was honorably discharged from the service on November 9, 1945, after attaining the rank of Lieutenant at which point he returned to St. Joseph to begin a lifelong career as a banker and civic leader. Preceding him in death were his parents, Milton and Natalie Gilbert Tootle, first wife, Martha Hartwig Tootle, second wife, Janet Rogers Tootle, brother, Gilbert Tootle, and grandson, Milton "Chip" Tootle. Survivors: wife, Ruth E. Tootle of the home; son, Milton Tootle, Jr. and wife Ann, of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Penny Tootle Blanchard and husband, Doug of Oceanside, CA; two grandsons, William Matthew Tootle and wife, Lynn of Knoxville, TN, and James Joshua Garrison and wife, Karen of Huntington Beach, CA; great-grandson, William Matthew Tootle, II of Knoxville, TN; great-granddaughter, Emma Adeline Tootle, of Omaha, NE; granddaughter, Sara Ann Offringa of Dallas, TX; and great-granddaughter, Madison Taylor Garrison, of Huntington Beach, CA. Services were held at the Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Navy Cross Awarded for actions during the World War II The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Ensign Milton Tootle, IV, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane in Fighting Squadron THREE (VF-3), attached to the U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5), during the "Air Battle of Midway," against enemy Japanese forces on 4 June 1942. While engaged in an assault against Japanese aerial forces about to attack his aircraft carrier, Ensign Tootle pursued a Torpedo Plane so relentlessly that he came under a fierce barrage of anti-aircraft fire from his own ship. Although the resultant damage to his plane caused the cockpit to become filled with smoke, he nevertheless pressed home the attack until his gunfire struck down the Torpedo Plane and sent it exploding into the sea. Despite the terrific hazard of flying his battered and smoking craft, he continued to carry on with grim determination and magnificent fortitude until ordered to crash-land in the water. As a last resort he was required to bail out and a short time afterward was picked up by a friendly destroyer. The outstanding courage and determined skill displayed by Ensign Tootle were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
