Brief Biography: As a recreation yachting appealed to Mr. Van Brunt probably more than any other sport. He was raised on the Atlantic seaboard and both he and his brother, W.T. , in their younger days were accustomed to yachting as a sport. When they came to St Joseph they introduced the sport on Lake Contrary, and for several years it was very popular. Many St Joseph people will remember the Sylvia, a graceful yacht, which won many a cup in racing in the waters of Lake Contrary in St Joseph and Lake Manawa at Omaha. J.H. and W. T. Van Brunt were the owners of the Sylvia. The yacht racing was at its height about 1909, and it engaged the attention of hundreds of sportsmen. The races were made annual events and were popular. When the races were sailed here the Omaha people would bring their yachts, loaded on flat cars, and when the races were sailed at Manawa, the Sylvia and other St Joseph yachts would be shipped to Omaha the same way. Probably more than anyone else Mr. Van Brunt was responsible for the success of these yacht races.
