Brief Biography: From funeral program provided by Meierhoffer Funeral Home May 20th, 1944- Edith Garrett Vollmer was born Nov. 7, 1878 at 1912 Savannah Ave. St. Joseph, MO. Her mother was Anna E. Garner, her father was William Washington Garrett. She had two brothers- both deceased- Wm. F. Garrett and Geo. Washington Garrett. Two sisters Sarah A. Garrett who married James A. Drais of Dearborn, MO. and Mildred Garrett who married Robert. T. Hopkins of St. Joseph, MO. The two sisters and mother are living at this date. Edith was a young girl when she gave her heart to and life to Christ and became a member of the Savannah Avenue Baptist Church, St. Joseph, MO. where she was active in Sunday School and Young Peoples Society. She attended Jennings Seminary, Aurora, Illinois. After attending St. Joseph High School and Gard’s business School in St. Joseph, MO. Her last position before her marriage was with Swift & Co. St. Joseph, MO., where she was secretary to the manager of Produce Department. On June 25, 1908 she married Fred Vollmer of St. Joseph, MO., the wedding was in the First Baptist CHurch of St. Joseph. She & her husband had grown up in the same church, gone to the same public schools. After her marriage her home was in Gallatin, MO. where her husband was secretary of the Y.M.C.A. She lived there about 7 years. On Dec. 15, 1909 their first child Elizabeth was born in Gallatin. Elizabeth passed away Jan 1, 1911 at the home of her Grandmother in St. Joseph, MO. On Sept. 29, 1914 their second child, Garner F. Vollmer was born in Gallatin, MO. The family returned to St. Joseph, MO. in April 1915. In Nov. 1924 the family removed to Miami, Florida where Edith passed away at 6:05 P.M. May 20th, 1944. Her body was taken back to St. Joseph, MO. and buried by the side of little Elizabeth in the family lot in Mt. Mora Cemetery. At her death she was a charter member of the University Baptist Church, Coral Gables, Fla. together with her husband and it was indeed a church home. Her son Garner gave his heart to Christ because of her teachings, and united with the same church when he was a young boy. Her work in her church was outstanding; she had charge of the Junior Dept. of the Sunday School and through her efforts and work, many of the Juniors became Christians. She also did wonderful work in the Baptist Training Union and the Women's Missionary Union. About 3 years ago she saw the need of getting Juniors and Intermediate boys and girls interested in Missions and by constant hard work organized a Girls Auxiliary, Royal Ambassadors, & Sunbeam groups in connection with the Women's Missionary Union. Beginning with the summer of 1936 the family lived each summer at the Southern Baptist Assembly at Ridgecrest, No. Car. where she spent many days studying to make herself more useful in her home church. At one time she was Pres. of P.T.A. of Miami High School and of Shenandoah Garden Club. On Mar. 24th, 1944 She was operated on at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fla. a tumor being removed from the bladder- for awhile she recovered nicely & was able to sit up & walk about some. On Sat. May 20, 1944 she suddenly got worse & passed away at 6:05 P.M. her husband & the doctor at her bedside. Her son Garner was in Italy on the way to Rome with the Field Artillery of 85th Division serving as a 1st Lt. & doing advanced observation work. She constantly prayed for him and longed for his return. A useful life on earth has gone to her rich reward. A faithful and loving wife and mother. email from Sue Bayley Drais- There were a lot of contacts of Memaw (Sarah Agnes “Sadie” Garrett Drais 1889-1983), Aunt Mid (Anna Mildred Garrett Hopkins Semrad 1899-1990) & Aunt Edith (Elizabeth Garrett Vollmer), with Gallatin, Missouri & I'm trying to remember. One of course was that Aunt Edith met Uncle Fred there & then married him. But there was another family who were friends of the Garretts in some way and with whom they used to visit a lot. One was a matriarch of some family they all loved but can't remember her name. She would have been a generation older than the Garrett girls. She worked in DC for years in a very responsible job when women didn’t get to do that. Can YOU think of her name? This couldn't have been Uncle Fred's mother, could it? I don't think so. Sarah was crazy about this woman's grandson? & actually was engaged to him I think but he died in an auto accident & I don't think she ever forgot him, or really got over him. This was when she was in college. Memaw loved him too. I bet Sally Shattuck would know, or maybe even Scott. But don't mention the part about her not ever forgetting him! She & Willis had a supremely happy marriage I do know. But sometimes a first love is like that. I think this woman grew up in Gallatin, and that's why she had retired there from such a busy life in DC. That's when they would visit her & all her progeny. The boy Sarah liked went to Annapolis I believe but not sure. Someone in the family was an army engineer & worked on one of the dams out here which impressed Memaw a lot. Can't think of his name either. An odd one, or a nickname. Oh, now I'll never get to sleep. I think this man had a daughter Buzz's (James Alonzo Drais 1929-1990) age whom he dated when stationed in DC for a short time, her name was Gigi or Bege or something like that. Someone told us she had died several years ago. It seems to me they were all in Gov. work. Love, Sue - 2007.
