Brief Biography:
Leaving school when about 15 years of age, he worked at the Van Natta-Lynde Drug Company in St. Joseph, Missouri for about three years, then accepted a position with the Y.M.C.A. as assistant to the secretary, Mr. lloyd. Resigned after two years and went to New York City in 1900 and found employment with Lehn & Fink, wholesale druggists. Remained there five years, then went to Eli Lilly Company, another Drug Company, for whom he travelled as a salesman in Delaware and Maryland.
After six months he resigned and returned to Brooklyn, New York and found employment in a retail Oriental Rug store. While there he heard of an opening in a wholesale Oriental Rug Company in New York City. Applied for the position and was taken on by the John C. Uhrlaub Oriental Rug Company where he remained employed for 14 years. At the end of that period, Mr. Miles R. Price, also an employee and manager of the Uhrlaub firm (Mr. Uhrlaub having died in 1917) decided to go into business for himself and took William Frederick Vollmer with him in 1919. He was with the Price firm for 12 years. Price decided to go out of business during the depression in 1932 and liquidated and closed his business at the end of 1932.
William remained in New York until July 1933 when he went home to visit with his mother and sister and also to say "Good-bye" as he had made up his mind to take a trip to Europe. He returned to New York about August 1st, 1933 and then on the 8th of August he sailed on the "S. S. Europa" for Bremen, Germany. Remained in Europe for a little more than a year, traveling in Germany, Holland, Switzerland, France and Italy and stopped over in London for three weeks on the return homeward, arriving in New York on September 1st, 1934. Went St. Joseph, Missouri in time for Christmas in 1934. Remained all winter and returned to New York in June, 1935.
Accepted a position with with the Schulthesis Wholesale and Retail Art Company and remained with them until the business closed in 1938. Since then he is a "Gentleman of forced leisure" and now lives on his income, be that as it is, may be or will be, a frank statement and a true one.
Went to Miami, Florida in November 1939, stayed there until March 1st, 1940, returned to Newark, New Jersey to work for Mr. Price's brother. The job lasted only four months because the business was "a flop" and closed up. Since then he spends most of his time in writing letters and making the "Family Tree" on both sides of the family and at the present time is living in Newark, New Jersey. Cheerio!! -William Frederick Vollmer, 1941. |
