Brief Biography: He was born in Richardson County, Nebraska Dec 21, 1864 to William Henry Ziemendorff of Prussia, Germany and Margaretha Sprenger of Hesse Castle, Germany.
He married Leda Manley Jul 11, 1914 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. She had been formerly married to Willis M. Hall Jun 6, 1897 divorced in 1909.
She was the daughter of John W. Manley I Martha A. Monday.
He came to St. Joseph in 1882 and worked as a clerk in a drugstore. He became interested in pharmacy and went to Buffalo, New York to the University of Buffalo and received his degree in 1890.
When he returned he was appointed by Huston-Wyeth, president of the Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals, as superintendent of this organization, the forerunner of the Humane Society.
He received this appointment Jan 1, 1899. Two years later the society was reincorporated to administer aid to homeless and needy children. He established a home for them called Sheltering Arms Sept 1, 1906.
He was also agitator for the establishment of a juvenile court in St. Joseph.
He served 39 years as Buchanan County humane officer resigning Dec. 14, 1937 due to poor health.
His wife Leda is well known for matron of Sheltering Arms.
He was a member of Woodmen of the World and Knights of Pythias lodge.
He had two sons, William A. Ziemendorff Jr. of Denver, CO., and George H. Ziemendorff of Kansas City, MO, three grandchildren, two sisters; Mrs. Catherine Linsacum of Falls City, NE and Miss Emma Ziemendorff of St. Joseph, MO. |
