Charles Spencer Wilcox, 95, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away on August 10, 2013 at his home.
Charles was born on October 10, 1917, in St. Joseph to Sam and Effie (Spencer) Wilcox.
Charles married Louise Marguerite Carder on January 31, 1948, who survives at the home.
Charles graduated from the University of Missouri receiving degrees in business and law. Charles was a member of the Missouri Bar Association for over 50 years. During this time, Charles was the first attorney to represent Missouri Western State College and served in that capacity for over 31 years.
In 1942, Charles was the first St. Joseph attorney drafted into World War II. Charles served his county in the army for five years in the South Pacific stationed in Australia. Charles was assigned to the Allied Intelligence Bureau which provided support to Pacific island Coastwatchers. Charles was discharged from the army as a Major in 1946.
Charles was a Mason, St. Joseph Lodge #78 and a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Charles was a member of the Moila Shriners, Royal Order of Jesters, Order of the Eastern Star, American Trial Lawyers Association, St. Joseph Country Club, Benton Club, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, and Lions Club. Charles also served on the Boards of United Way, Family Guidance Center, Red Cross and Y.M.C.A.
Charles was a Lifelong Elder at First Christian Church of St. Joseph.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his sister, Dorothy McGrail.
He is survived by his wife, Louise and three children; Jane (Wilcox) Hibler, Leawood, KS; Ellen (Wilcox) Cunat, Baltimore, MD; Todd Wilcox, Denver, CO; and five grandchildren; Spencer Hibler, Overland Park, KS; Jennifer Hibler, Chicago, IL; Kaitlin Cunat, Baltimore, MD; Kylie Wilcox, Denver, CO; Spencer Wilcox, Denver, CO.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 Noon Monday, August 12, 2013 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph, where the family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday evening.
A Private Family service will be held at a later date.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers that memorials are made to Heartland Hands of Hope Hospice, 137 N. Belt Hwy, Heartland Health Business Plaza, St. Joseph, MO, 64506, or First Christian Church, 927 Faraon St., St. Joseph, MO, 64501. |
