| Brief Biography: Mr. Alvah Patee Clayton was born December 27, 1860 to Wellington Clayton & Almira Elizabeth Patee in Ashley, Ohio. His mother was the daughter of Alvah Patee Roxanna Smith of Auburn, NY. She later married Samuel Russell.
In 1865 his parents moved to Saint Joseph, MO where he attended public schools and Christian Brothers'College.
Alvah Patee Clayton started out in the grocery business and became head of Sheridan-Clayton Paper Company.
June 15, 1887 he married Miss Mattie M. Gunn daughter of Robert Gunn and Caroline Augusta. They had three children: Robert Griffin Clayton, Edward Smith Clayton, and Alvah Patee Clayton Jr.
He made the Moila Temple famous in Saint Joseph by buying camels for Krug Park and taking them to national meetings.
He was active in politics as a Democrat and served two terms as mayor.
He was buried in Mount Mora in the Clayton Triangle. |
