Brief Biography:
William was one of the early settlers of St. Joseph, coming here in 1855. He engaged in the freighting business between St. Joseph and California, and returned from one trip with $50,000 in gold dust. He was a pioneer shoe and boot manufacturer/merchant in St. Joseph with his brother-in-law, Richard Fisher, supplying individuals who were primarily headed west. His store was located on the north side of Felix Street, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. About thirty years before his death, in company with M.S. Norman, Thomas E. Tootle and others, William engaged in the cattle business, but the venture was unprofitable, and much of his fortune was dissipated. He was active in the affairs of city government, holding the position of Treasurer of St. Joseph in 1869.
