Brief Biography: Born in Feb 1828, Cambridge, Dorchester County, MD died August 7, 1805, at his home in St. Joseph, MO. His parents were John and Sarah Ellen (Pattison) Donovan, member of old and prominent Maryland families.
The ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War.
John received his education at Cambridge in Easton, Maryland, finishing the academic course.
He had several different business endeavors and settled in St. Joseph, Missouri in June 1868. He engaged in real estate with A.M. Saxton which after Mr. Saxton's death became Donovan & Son. During the War of the Rebellion he was captain of a troop of Maryland Cavalry. He also served in the State Guards of Maryland, but did not participate in active field hostilies.
He was a life-long Democrat, Episcopalian and vestryman in Christ Church, St. Joseph. He was a Mason of high standing. He was married December 1, 1850, to Miss Evelina M. Robinson, of Talbot County, Maryland. Mrs. Donovan's father was an agriculturist and old resident of Maryland, of English descent. Her death occurred March 3i, 1895, only a few months before the demise of John Donovan. |
