Brief Biography: Mr. Joel E. Gates was born Feb 5, 1858 in Buchanan County, MO. He was the son of Elijah P. & Mariah Stamper Gates. He married Miss Vickie M. Buford of Lexington, KY, He met her at a party given by his father Col. Elijah Gates famed Confederate officer who served under Gen. Sterling Price.
They would have celebrated there fiftieth wedding anniversary on Nov 19, 1941, but he died Oct 1, 1941 of a coronary occlusion.
He served in various political offices during his career.
He was foreman of the W.P.A. project in Krug Park for more than a year.
He was a collector of pipes.
