Brief Biography: St. Joseph Gazette 2/9/1944
Miss Lucy Wetmore Horton, member of a pioneer family, died Tuesday night at a nursing home after a period of declining health. For many years she was widely known in educational and political circles.
Miss Horton, who was 80 years old last Jan. 8, was the eldest daughter of the late Edwin R. Horton and Marry Skinner Bennison (Mary Skinner Denison)Horton, who came to St. Joseph in 1860. The year Miss Horton was born the parents purchased the house at 401 South Twelfth street and she lived there unto two years ago when her health failed. She later lived at the home of George W. Groneweg, 211 South Seventeenth street.
After completing her education in private and public schools, Miss Horton became a teacher and before 1929, when she retired, had been at Musser, Neeley, South Park, Everett and Longfellow schools. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and in her active years was a member of the Runcie Club and the Fortnightly Musical Club. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church.
The civic interests of Miss Horton were varied and she became very active in the Republican politics serving as a member of the city central committee.
The only immediate survivors are two sisters, Miss Annie Horton, St. Joseph, and Mrs. Jesse A. Underhill, Wichita, Kan., the former Miss Helen Horton. The body is at Heaton-BeGole & Bowman mortuary awaiting the funeral arrangements. |
