Brief Biography: born in Huntley, Scotland
Obituary by Babette on Find a Grave
Jessie Andrews Kelly was born in Aberdeen Scotland to George and Janette (Skinner) Andrews. When she was a child, she entered the United States with her parents, locating in Iowa City, Iowa where her father obtained employment as a merchant tailor. There, she met and married Richard H. Kelly in 1856.
Richard, reportedly a civil engineer of "great talent," built bridges in the deep south before the Civil War. From his own designs, he supervised the construction of the bridge over the Mississippi River in Davenport.
Shortly before the Civil War, Richard went south to construct the North and South Alabama Railroad and the Cincinnati Railway. He got stranded in Alabama when war broke out.
Jessie begged General Dodge to let her cross the enemy lines so that she could be with her husband. She was given a pass.
The couple remained in Alabama after the war, settling in Montgomery and raising their son Charles and two daughters.
Richard died there in 1878 and Jessie moved to Decatur, Illinois where Charles was working as a clerk in the Wabash Offices. He and Jessie moved to St. Joseph in 1881. He went into the insurance and real estate business with his Uncle, John Andrews, and purchased some brownstones on 1210 Frederick Avenue, where the family lived for several years.
In 1895, he built a Queen Anne mansion on South 12th Street. Jessie and several other siblings and Francis Andrews lived with him. Jessie's obituary mentions that she liked to entertain and that the house was often full of guests. An 18-year old servant, Lewis Heckerson, from Sweden also lived in the house and occupied a room on the third floor.
In 1904, Jessie became very ill, and her condition worsened two weeks before her death in August, 1905. Papers report that her death "was not unexpected." Her official cause of death is "septicemia," blood poisoning.
Charles, according to newspapers of the time, had been very close to his mother and never recuperated from her death. He died in 1907 following a carriage accident. See his listing here. And the two are buried side-by-side at Mount Mora Cemetery. The graves lie adjacent to their relative, Robert C. Andrews who was born in Huntley Scotland.
Jessie's funeral was held at the Christ Episcopal Church in downtown St. Joseph. She was survived by: her son Charles; two daughters, Mrs. Harold L. Coulter Dumas, Arkansas, and Mrs. Fred H. Stem of St. Joseph; her brothers, George L. Andrews of Kansas City, and John H. Andrews of St. Joseph; two sisters, Miss Lizzie Andrews of Kansas City, and Miss Francis Andrews of St. Joseph.
I've researched Charles and his mother, because I own and live in the mansion on 12th St that Charles built in 1895, and because, he and his mother's spirits are still here. We think of them as family. |
