AN OLD CITIZEN GONE, Israel Landis Dies After a Lingering Illness.

Israel Landis, one of the pioneer citizens of St. Joseph, died at his home, Seventeenth street and Buchanan avenue, at 3 o clock yesterday afternoon, after an illness of several months. Deceased was born in Lancaster county, Pa., October 17, 1808, and remained there until 1833, when he moved to St. Louis, where he followed the business of saddle and harness making for eight years, when he sold out and bought a farm near the city and remained there until 1844, when he removed to the site of what is now the city of St. Joseph and remained here until his death. Mr. Landis was actively engaged in business in St. Joseph for many years and was connected with many of the business enterprises of the city. He was one of a company of three who laid out the cemetery now known as Mount Mora. Mr. Landis early took a lively interest in the affairs of the city. He was an active member in the first city council of St. Joseph, and a representative Odd Fellow, having joined the order in 1847, and at the time of his death was a member of King Hill Lodge No.19. He was married to Miss Sarah Stibbs in St. Louis May 3, 1836. He has four children and a number of grandchildren still living.

In the fall of 1844, Israel Landis became a citizen of St. Joseph. Landis, a saddle and harness maker, would advertise his products in the local newspapers with "Big Saddle Poetry" which had the lines, "If a good saddle you would find, one that is just suited to your mind, you need not to St. Louis go, for you can get one in St. Joe."
