Brief Biography: DEADLY GASOLINE.
Whole Family Burned to Death in St. Joseph, Mo.
St. Joseph, Mo., special of the 13th says:
A terrible accident occurred in this city to-day, in which an entire family was destroyed.
About 5 o'clock this morning Mrs. Jas. McGinnis had filled a gasoline lamp and lighted it, and was in the act of putting on the chimney when the lamp exploded, filling the room with a sheet of fire, a daughter, aged 17 years, who was standing near, was enveloped in flames; Mr. McGinnis sprang to the rescue of his family, he threw the mother and an infant daughter through the window into the street, and thus saved them from sure destruction, and in attempting to save the oldest girl, his own clothing caught fire and he and the girl were literally roasted alive. A son, aged 18 years, threw a bucket of water on his sister and extinguished the flames, but she and her father were so horribly burned that the flesh dropped from their bones.
The girl died about 11 o'clock this morning, and the father at 12:30 o'clock to-day. Mrs. McGinnis and infant daughter are lying to-night in a very critical condition, and but little hopes are entertained of their recovery. The boy is also severely burned.
Mr. McGinnis was a carpenter aged 48 years, and in his younger days was a soldier in the regular army, and stationed at Fort Leavenworth. His oldest son is mailing clerk in the office of the St. Joseph Herald.
