Services for Emmett E. Beckley, retired realtor and businessman of St. Joseph, will be Thursday afternoon at 2 in the Meierhoffer-Fleeman chapel. Dr. E.W. Potts will officiate and burial will be at Mount Mora Cemetery. Mr. Beckley died yesterday afternoon at a St. Joseph hospital after suffering a heart attack Friday. He was 79. Mr. Beckley was a descendant of a pioneer family. His grandfather came to Missouri by boat during the Civil War to escape hostilities and save his slaves. He settled near Richmond, Mo. to become a tobacco farmer. He had been one in Kentucky. Mr. Beckley was born in 1887 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beckley of St. Joseph. His father was a railroad man. At the time of his marriage to Mrs. Beckley, Emmett Beckley was assistant ticket agent with the Missouri Pacific Railroad here. In the early 1930's Mr. Beckley and his three sons owned and operated a gas service garage at 19th and Frederick avenue. He was a member of the Missouri Bar Association, but used his law degree in real estate interests only. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Minna Long Beckley, of the home 502 South 9th street; three sons, Barrett L. Beckley, a car dealer in St. Joseph; Benton C.Beckley, Palm Springs, Calif., and Dr. E.E. Beckley Jr. Kansas City North; a sister Mrs. Fred Whitehead, St. Joseph; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. |
