| Brief Biography: Newspaper article: The funeral for Dr. W.W. Wertenberger, who was killed by a stray bullet during the shooting near Twelfth and Frederick avenue late Monday night, is to be held Thursday afternoon, it was announced Tueday.
The cortege will leave his residence, 1200 1/2 Isadore street for the First Methodist Church where friends are invited to attend at 4 0'clock. Burial is to be at the Mount Mora Cemetery and will be private. Doctor Wertenberger and his wife were walking up Frederick avenue Monday night and he was shot to death while standing before the Foster-Penny Tire Company shop. He was rushed to Noyes Hospital, but death came at 12:40 o'clock Tuesday morning. The bullets that struck him were fired by Charley Haynes at officers who were attempting to arrest him. Haynes had gone to his hone near there to kill his wife.
Two arrests were made following the affray. Both men were being held for investigation. James Haynes, said to be a nephew of Charley Haynes was arrested Monday night at 1206 Prospect avenue and Oley King 21 years old, was arrested Tuesday by the police in connection with the shooting. When he was arrested, a revolver was found on his person.
The funeral of Charley Haynes we to be held Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Mount Auburn cemetery. His body is to be moved to the home of his sister, Mrs. A.L. Whaley, 2318 South Ninth steet, Wednesday it is understood. |
